Laboratory Facilities A molecular biology facility is available to the current investigators at the Center for Non-Communicable Diseases (CNCD), Pakistan. CNCD houses current state of the art equipments to meet the standards of international research. There is a well-integrated high-throughput setup, which includes facilities to process biological samples and store them, extract DNA and RNA, sort different blood cells, and conduct detailed serum analyses. In the past ten years, CNCD processed and stored 1 million aliquots. Facilities to store biological samples such as liquid nitrogen tanks, -80 0C, -40 0C and -20 0C freezers are also available. All the freezers are connected to a central alarm system and technical help is available 24-hours in cases of emergency. CNCD has a back-up generator which is able to cover deficits in the electricity in case of a power failure.

Office space, computers and data-storage facility All health physicians, research associates and laboratory staff based at CNCD have access to individual computers. Personalised accounts and institutional email addresses have been provided to all our staff. Separate facilities are available for data storage and data entry purposes as well.

Clinical Facilities CNCD is currently collaborating with thirteen different tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad. All research medical officers have access to the emergency room, medical units, neurology stroke unit or ward, ICU or CCU and out-patient departments of these participating centers. CNCD has established a field lab at all of these institutes with space available for processing of biological samples and storage at 80 0C, -20 0C and -4 0C freezers. All the freezers are plugged to emergency lines connected to a stand-by central generator. All these institutes have also provided a clinical room to our staff to conduct interviews of participants eligible for enrolment to any of our studies.
